Crops are really the central focus of Farmville; without them the economy of the game comes to a grinding halt.  You, the farmer, must use your resources to come up with the best possible harvest.
Technically speaking, there are three different kinds of crops to harvest in Farmville: animals, trees, and seed crops.  This article will deal with seed crops—see “Trees” or “Animals” to help you make the most of these other crops.
Seed crops require a couple steps that animals and trees do not.  You will need the following:

  • one or more squares of soil; alternatively, free space on your farm to plow a new field.
  • seeds
  • time! (growing times range from 2 hours to several days)
To start, prepare your field by clicking either on the fallow soil where a crop just been harvested, or pick a blank piece of grass to turn into field.  Click once and you will plow it.  Once you’ve plowed, go to the Market and buy whatever kind of seed you
Choosing a Crop
There are hundreds of charts online that will tell you what crops will give you the most coins for the least amount of time invested.  To let the cat out of the bag: berries.  Lots and lots of berries.  They’re perfect if you’re going to be logging on frequently or staying online for extended periods of time.  However, if you go to sleep for 8 hours and come back, your blueberries will be rotten.  Plan your crop so that you will always be there to harvest it.  Spoiled harvests steal your coins and time so try to avoid them at all costs!
Make yourself a chart with the following information:
Crop Cost to Plant Time to Harvest Harvest Income Income divided by hours
Name of crop Cost of seeds +cost to plow hours
(Harvest) – (cost to plant)
For example, plug in the formula for blueberries:
Crop Cost to Plant Time to Harvest Harvest Income Income divided by hours
Blueberries 50 + (15) 4 hours 91 26 6.5/hour
As you level up and unlock more crops, keep adding rows of information to your chart.  You’ll always have an up to date reference guide to help you plan your crops!
Vehicles:
Farmville has decided to make the plantation farmer’s life easier by providing farming vehicles to help you with the tedious tasks of plowing, seeding and harvesting.  Once you expand a couple times and you’re sick and tired of clicking of each little square of ground to plow, purchase a tractor.  The tractor plows 2×2 squares of ground at once, enabling you to work 4 times more efficiently.  Keep an eye on the fuel gauge on the left lower part of your screen—it’s possible to run out of fuel.  Thankfully, it refills every 6.5 hours.  All of the vehicles on your farm share the same tank of fuel.  The other vehicles which will make your life easier include a seeder and harvester.  They work on the same economy, harvesting or seeding a 2×2 square of ground.
